What is Sculptra and How is it Used for Skin Rejuvenation?

Sculptra is an injectable filler made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic material. Unlike traditional fillers that simply add volume, Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production. Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure and elasticity, and as we age, our collagen production declines, giving our skin a saggy or wrinkled appearance.

How does Sculptra work for skin rejuvenation?

Once injected, the PLLA microparticles in Sculptra are gradually absorbed by your body. This triggers your skin cells to produce more collagen, which fills in wrinkles and plumps up sagging areas. The results are subtle and develop gradually over time, typically taking 3-6 months to see the full effect. Sculptra is usually administered as a series of 2 or 3 injections over a period of 2 or 3 months.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Sculptra is a good option for people who are looking for a non-surgical way to address:

  • Deep wrinkles and folds, such as smile lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines
  • Facial volume loss, especially in the cheeks and temples

What are the benefits of Sculptra?

  • Long-lasting results: Sculptra can last for over 2 years, which is longer than traditional dermal fillers.
  • Natural-looking results: Sculptra gradually stimulates collagen production, so the results look natural and subtle.
  • Minimal downtime: You can usually return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.
  • Versatility: Sculptra can be used to treat a variety of areas on the face. It is particularly useful in the cheeks, temples, jowls, and neck. It can also be used in the hands and buttocks (“butt lift”).

What are the risks of Sculptra?

  • Injection site reactions: Common, but minor reactions include temporary bruising, swelling, and redness.
  • Granuloma formation: This is a rare complication that occurs when the body forms small lumps around the injection site. Usually these are not visible
  • Allergic reaction: This is very rare, but it is important to let Dr. Krushel know if you have any allergies to PLLA or local anesthetic.
